Eastern Red Cedar Kid Size Log Stools
This all natural wood stool is made one at a time and each one is a unique functional art piece. We start with a peeled Eastern Red Cedar Log Base that we cut and level to a comfortable height for kids and top it with a Heart Redwood seat we reclaim from old redwood playsets and outdoor furniture. We feel the use of old playscapes adds a sense of good energy, past dreams and excursions launched from the the backyard. We use the wide base of the cedar log as a pattern for the seat and if needed, add a few curves if the piece requires a little someting extra. The Story From Jack About This Great Cedar Log Stool
My promise to my client was to make a pair of wooden stools to go with a fold up table. Originally, the stools were meant to be made from wood, cut to angles and fastened together, something similar to what your kids might use to reach the sink. Like most things, the simplest route to making a kid size stool (or anything) eluded me. This very cool little stool was one of those spur of the moment type of things that my mind served up and my body was obliged to follow. My favorite part is the use of old retired swingsets to make the seat. Old swingsets are usually burned or taken to the dump when they've outlived their usefulness. It's kind of a sad end for something that provided so much joy and probably wants to keep working. We love passing that good energy on with a new life.
A simple stool can be made in a few hours, however this log stool takes considerably longer and requires a fair amount of patience to complete. I know you will love this custom seat for your kids. For those of you who want build your own stool, DIY Plans are in the works and will hopefully be released soon. In the meantime, for those who have been inspired, I've offered a rough general guide for what it takes to make one. Please follow all safety guidelines provided with any and all tools. Good Luck.
