If you like to build large projects, but have a little trouble visualizing the end result, we suggest building it in miniature to work out the engineering and the amount of lumber you will need to complete the project. This is one of the best ways to work out details before you spend big money on a big project.
We reclaim old redwood playsets and re-purpose them for model making
Building a large project such as a wood framed shed, shop, or playhouse sometimes looks great on paper, but when it's finished, you find it's too small or upon reflection you wish you had done something different or maybe you wasted a lot of material in the building process. Building a model of your proposed project makes it easy to see the end result and will expose shortcomings before it's too late. Modeling your project is easy and does not require inspections, city permits or a shop full of tools.
Ideally redwood would never be considered a good candidate for this purpose simply because of its overall value. It's far too expensive to cut up into tiny parts. Since we're recycling, for our purposes it is perfect. Heart Redwood is very stable, it resist insect damage and water damage. It's a light wood feeling similar to balsa wood, but with a longer more dense grain and is overall stronger. It maintains a uniform color and it's very easy to work with making it user friendly for kids projects. Cuts can be made with a small saw or utility blade and shaping with sandpaper is so easy, you'll be surprised. Joints can be glued, brad nailed or pinned and glued.

For safety reasons, fastener availabilty and maximum yield of the reclaimed wood we use, our lumber sizes are made close to scale, but are not exact. We also limit lengths to fit in the largest USPS flat rate priority mail box available to save shipping cost. We offer miniature representations of actual 2" x 4", 2" x 6", 4" x 4", 4" x 6", and 6" x 6". All of the miniature lumber is cut by hand, unfinished and is 100% heart redwood cut exclusively from old swingsets and playsets. Fasteners, adhesives, or tools are not included.
Jack loves to build these models. If you want one, let us know.
How do we obtain our redwood for miniature model wood working?
We use redwood mostly because we have access to it and trying to find a use for it is a passion that has few rewards when you consider the effort involved in getting it to a usable state. It takes a lot of work to mill a 4" x "4 post down to a final product.
Our parent company, Playset Services, moves, repairs and removes old used up swingsets. In that process we end up with piles of redwood and cedar lumber with rot damage, holes in random places or broken bolts embedded deep in the wood. We filter through these wood piles and remove damaged material. The end result is a bunch of random quality pieces of wood of different lengths and sizes that may or may not find a home as a planterbox, clipboard or recycling tool. We endeavor to maximize the usage of the leftover materials and this miniature lumberyard is probably one of the best ways to utilize the smallest pieces rather than burning them.
